  3. Title: Upgrading to DR DOS 6.0 with Stacker Installed.

  7. Background.
  8.  
  9.    STACKER has been found to be compatible with DR DOS 6.0. This note
  10.    outlines the procedure for upgrading your system to DR DOS 6.0 when
  11.    Stacker is already installed.
  12.  
  13.    This procedure is NOT required if the following conditions are true:
  14.  
  15.    1. Stacker has not yet been installed.  Install DRDOS 6.0, then Stacker.
  16.    
  17.    2. The boot drive is NOT being SSWAPped, AND there is enough room on the 
  18.       uncompressed drive C: (3 MB) for the DR DOS 6.0 files. In this case, 
  19.       simply boot up with the DRDOS 6.0 STARTUP diskette and run INSTALL.
  20.  
  21. Installation Procedure.
  22.  
  23.    NOTE: This procedure assumes that:
  24.        1. Drive C: is the boot drive.
  25.        2. It may or may not be SSWAPped with a Stacker drive
  26.        3. There is enough disk space (3MB) on the Stacker drive to install
  27.           DR DOS 6.0.
  28.  
  29.    In the following sequence of steps, you will need to know which drive
  30.    letter refers to your boot drive and which drive letter refers to your
  31.    Stacker drive. Type  C:\Stacker\Stacker   <ENTER>  to display the Stacker
  32.    drive map. The drive map will look similar to the following example:
  33.  
  34.    Stacker Disk Mount Utility - Stac Electronics, Carlsbad, CA 
  35.    Stacker drive map:
  36.    Drive C: was drive D: at boot time  [ D:\STACVOL.DSK = XX.XMB  ]
  37.    Drive D: was drive C: at boot time  
  38.   
  39.    No available replaceable drive(s).
  40.     
  41.    The boot drive is the drive that "was C:" at boot time. If drive C: was 
  42.    drive C: at boot time then the drives are not swapping.
  43.  
  44. 1.  Remove the read-only attribute from files already on the system.
  45.     Please insert your Stacker diskette into drive A: (or drive B:). If you
  46.     are using the 5.25" Stacker Diskettes you will need to insert the Utility
  47.     Disk (Disk #2). Change to the diskette drive by typing A: (or B:) and 
  48.     pressing Enter. Then type the following commands :
  49.  
  50.     SATTRIB  -R  C:\CONFIG.SYS         <ENTER>
  51.     SATTRIB  -R  C:\AUTOEXEC.BAT       <ENTER>
  52.     SATTRIB  -R  C:\COMMAND.COM        <ENTER>
  53.  
  54.     (In the next command, substitute the name of your DOS directory if it
  55.     is named something other than \DOS.)
  56.  
  57.     SATTRIB  -R  C:\DOS\COMMAND.COM    <ENTER>
  58.  
  59.     In the following four commands, if drive C: is swapping, remember to
  60.     use the boot drive letter you found above to replace the drive letter
  61.     x:. If drive C: is not swapping, use the drive letter of your Stacker
  62.     drive in place of x:.
  63.  
  64.     SATTRIB  -R  x:\CONFIG.SYS         <ENTER>
  65.     SATTRIB  -R  x:\AUTOEXEC.BAT       <ENTER>
  66.     SATTRIB  -R  x:\COMMAND.COM        <ENTER>
  67.  
  68.     (As before, in the next command, substitute the name of your DOS
  69.     directory if it is named something other than \DOS.)
  70.  
  71.     SATTRIB  -R  x:\DOS\COMMAND.COM    <ENTER>
  72.  
  73. 2.  Copy the CONFIG.SYS and AUTOEXEC.BAT files to the Stacker drive.
  74.     If drive C: is swapping, type the following:
  75.  
  76.     REN C:\CONFIG.SYS CONFIG.STA               <ENTER>
  77.     REN C:\AUTOEXEC.BAT AUTOEXEC.STA           <ENTER>
  78.     COPY x:\CONFIG.SYS C:\                     <ENTER>
  79.     ( x: is the boot drive swapping with C:)   
  80.     COPY x:\AUTOEXEC.BAT C:\                   <ENTER>
  81.     ( x: is the boot drive swapping with C:)   
  82.  
  83.     If drive C: is not swapping, type the following:
  84.  
  85.     REN x:\CONFIG.SYS CONFIG.STA               <ENTER>
  86.     ( x: is the Stacker drive) 
  87.     REN x:\AUTOEXEC.BAT AUTOEXEC.STA           <ENTER>
  88.     ( x: is the Stacker drive) 
  89.  
  90.     COPY C:\CONFIG.SYS x:\                     <ENTER>
  91.     COPY C:\AUTOEXEC.BAT x:\                   <ENTER>
  92.  
  93. 3.  Insert the DR DOS 6.0 STARTUP Disk (Disk #1) in the A: drive. Then
  94.     type the following commands:
  95.  
  96.     COPY A:\COMMAND.COM C:\                    <ENTER>
  97.     COPY A:\COMMAND.COM x:\                    <ENTER>
  98.  
  99.     (In the next set of commands, substitute the name of your DOS directory 
  100.     if it is named something other than 'DOS'.)
  101.  
  102.     COPY A:\COMMAND.COM C:\DOS                 <ENTER>
  103.     COPY A:\COMMAND.COM x:\DOS                 <ENTER>
  104.  
  105. 4.  Boot the system with the DR DOS 6.0 STARTUP Disk in the A: drive.
  106.  
  107. 5.  At the opening screen of the DR DOS 6.0 installation, press the F10
  108.     key to abort. Then choose "EXIT TO DR DOS" and press Enter.
  109.  
  110. 6.  At the A> prompt, type the following:   SYS C:  
  111.     The system will respond with: "Destination Disk was not formatted under 
  112.     current Operating System. Writing new boot sector.  System files copied."
  113.  
  114. 7.  Remove the DR DOS 6.0 STARTUP disk from the A: drive and reboot the
  115.     system from the hard disk.  This will start the system with DR DOS 6.0 
  116.     and the Stacker drive(s) will be available.  If any application is 
  117.     automatically loaded during bootup, please exit the application and 
  118.     return to the DOS prompt.
  119.  
  120. 8.  At the C> prompt, place the DR DOS 6.0 STARTUP disk back into the A:
  121.     driv.
  122.  
  123. 9.  Type the following:  A:AUTOEXEC
  124.  
  125. 10. The installation process for DR DOS 6.0 will begin.  At the opening 
  126.     screen, press the Enter key to continue.  Choose to install DR DOS on the 
  127.     C: drive and press Enter.  Next, select the option to "Use the information 
  128.     in the existing file(s)."
  129.  
  130. 11. You will now be asked to specify the drive letter and directory
  131.     name to receive the DR DOS 6.0 files.  Move the cursor to the suggested
  132.     pathname for DR DOS 6.0. If drive C: is swapping, choose drive C:; if
  133.     drive C: is not swapping, choose drive x: (remember to substitute the
  134.     actual drive letter for 'x:', determined above). Also, change the
  135.     \DRDOS subdirectory to the name of your DOS directory.  This is
  136.     because we want to overwrite the existing DOS version with DR DOS 6.0.
  137.     Otherwise, there will be two DOS versions on the system at the same
  138.     time.
  139.  
  140. 12. Choose to "Replace all DOS files on the destination drive."
  141.  
  142. 13. At this point, you may choose either to skip the configuration and
  143.     go directly to installation, or you may choose to proceed with further
  144.     configuration.
  145.  
  146. 14. Follow the instructions displayed on your screen to complete the
  147.     installation of DR DOS 6.0.  When DR DOS 6.0 is finished, you will be 
  148.     given a choice to "Exit to DR DOS" or "Reboot Computer."  Choose 
  149.     "Exit to DR DOS."
  150.  
  151. 15. If drive C: is not swapping, type the following:
  152.  
  153.     COPY x:\CONFIG.SYS C:\            <ENTER>
  154.     COPY x:\AUTOEXEC.BAT C:\          <ENTER>
  155.  
  156.     If drive C: is swapping, type the following:
  157.  
  158.     COPY C:\CONFIG.SYS x:\            <ENTER>
  159.     COPY C:\AUTOEXEC.BAT x:\          <ENTER>
  160.  
  161. 16. Remove the last DR DOS 6.0 diskette and reboot the system from the
  162.     hard disk.
  163.  
  164. 17. DR DOS 6.0 adds new commands to your existing CONFIG.SYS file. When the 
  165.     machine is rebooted, DR DOS will ask if you want to execute any commands 
  166.     from your previous CONFIG.SYS. This will particularly affect the Stacker 
  167.     lines. Hit 'Y' to each of the questions about loading the Stacker 
  168.     drivers. When the system has completed booting, use your favorite text 
  169.     editor (or the DR DOS EDITOR program) to remove the '?' from in front of 
  170.     the Stacker lines. You will also need to examine any other lines which 
  171.     have been so marked. These changes need to be made to the CONFIG.SYS file 
  172.     on the uncompressed drive. After making these changes, copy the 
  173.     CONFIG.SYS file to the Stacker drive.
  174.  
  175.     Also during bootup, you may see a "Bad or missing file..." message as
  176.     DR DOS attempts to find a DOS program or driver not copied to the
  177.     uncompressed drive during the installation process. Simply copy the
  178.     missing program file(s) from your DOS directory on the Stacker drive
  179.     to the directory on the uncompressed drive where DR DOS is looking.
  180.  
  181.     For example, if you were previously loading the DOS file 'ANSI.SYS'
  182.     from the 'DOS' directory on the uncompressed drive, type the following
  183.     to update 'ANSI.SYS' to the DR DOS 6.0 version (as before, substitute
  184.     the name of your DOS directory if it is named something other than
  185.     \DOS:
  186.  
  187.     COPY C:\DOS\ANSI.SYS x:\DOS   (drive C: is SSWAPping)
  188.     or
  189.     COPY x:\DOS\ANSI.SYS C:\DOS   (drive C: is not SSWAPping)
  190.  
  191.     There may be other programs from the previous version of DOS on the
  192.     uncompressed drive which will need to be replaced with the equivalent 
  193.     DR DOS programs. You will need to search both the root directory and the 
  194.     DOS directory for these programs.
  195.  
  196. 18. Finally, some files from your previous DOS version may still be located 
  197.     in your DOS directory. These files have no corresponding replacement in 
  198.     DR DOS 6.0. Please examine them and consult your User's Guide to see if 
  199.     they can be deleted. Be careful not to delete anything which may be 
  200.     required for normal operation of your system. Type the following to 
  201.     display a list of these files (substitute the name of your DOS directory 
  202.     if it is named something other than \DOS):
  203.  
  204.     DIR C:\DOS /A | FIND /V "8-23-91" | MORE  (drive C: SSWAPping)
  205.     or
  206.     DIR x:\DOS /A | FIND /V "8-23-91" | MORE  (drive C: not SSWAPping)
  207.  
  208.     If you would like to send this listing to the printer, simply add the
  209.     characters  > PRN  to the end of the above lines.
  210.  
  211.     WARNING !! - DO NOT delete the files TASKMAX.INI, VIEWMAX.INI, or
  212.     DRDOS.INI. These files are critical to the correct operation of DR DOS
  213.     6.0. They will be included in the above listing because these files are
  214.     customized during installation and, therefore, the dates of these files
  215.     will be the date of your installation of DR DOS 6.0.
